Vitamins are micronutrients that your body needs on a regular basis to develop and maintain itself. They include vitamin A, C, D, E, K and the B vitamins (thiamine, riboflavin, niacin, pantothenic acid, biotin, vitamin B-6, vitamin B-12 and folate). Each of these vitamin has specific job to to do to keep you healthy and vibrant. For example, Vitamin A gives you better vision in low light.
All of the vitamins you need can usually be obtained in the foods you eat on a
healthy diet, and your body can also make vitamins D and K if it has enough other nutrients to manufacture them.
Failing to get enough vitamins through your food, and not supplementing your diet with vitamin pills can lead to deficiency diseases such as rickets (not enough vitamin D). Vegetarians often need to take vitamin B12 supplements. People following a gluten and casein free diet should consult with their practitioner regarding their needs for vitamin supplements.
