In food and dieting, the term
sugar refers to the substance
sucrose,
table sugar, or sometimes
saccharose. Sugar is used to increase the sweetness of foods and beverages. It typically comes from sugar cane or from sugar beets, but can also come from palm, corn and fruits.
Americans now consume, on average, 61 pounds of sugar each year, which is one of the key culprits in the ever increasing incidence of
diabetes. Consuming too much sugar spikes your blood sugar (
glucose) because it is so easily broken down and absorbed into the bloodstream. The same is true for syrups such as high fructose corn syrup, honey and molasses.
Heathly eating limits highly processed, sugar rich foods as much as possible by choosing healthier alternatives. MealMixer
