The formula is: GL = (GI x the amount of available carbohydrate) divided by 100. <a class="unknownlink" href="1.ashx" title="1">1</a><br /><br />The idea is that a high glycemic index food consumed in small quantities gives the same effect as larger quantities of a low glycemic index food on blood sugar. Glycemic Load is the product of the Glycemic Index and the grams of available carbohydrate (GL = GI × available Carb grams). For example, white rice has a high GI, so eating 100g of white rice at one sitting would give a similar glucose curve in the blood as eating 50g would butonly half the height. Since the peak height is the most important parameter for diabetes control, multiplying the amount of carbohydrates in a food serving by the glycemic index gives an idea of how much effect a food portion has on blood sugar level.

Carbohydrates that quickly metabolize release glucose into your bloodstream quickly, and so have a high glycemic index, while carbohydrates that break down slowly have a low GI.  A lower glycemic index indicates slower rates of digestion and absorption of carbohydrates and therefore sugar. <br /><br />Dr. David J. Jenkins and colleagues at the University of Toronto invented the Glycemic Index in order to determine the foods that were most appropriate for diabetics. A lower glycemic response usually means a lower insulin demand and so can improve long-term blood sugar control.<br /><br />To be scientific about this, GI is defined as the area under a two hour blood glucose response curve following the ingestion of 50 of carbohydate. We started this company to help people take control over their meals.  When you think about it, there are 21 meals in a week, and having to create them on the fly is stressful.  Planning your meals in advance, with us, will save stress, time, and money.  Using MealMixer for your dietary goals will allow you to eat real food (you can only drink so many diet shakes while your family eats delicious meals) and track your progress against your goals.  Our dieting tools are phenomenal!<br /><br />Setting up your taste and diet profiles will help us to suggest meals and recipes you'll like (also, the more ingredients you rate, the better your experience).  We have extensive help, all of which is accessed via the <a class='helpButton' href='#'>Help</a> button located at the top right of the pages, and <img src='/meal-planner/images/i.jpg' alt='help' /> buttons.
