Calcium is the key macromineral the body needs for bone development. It helps build strong bones and teeth. Milk and other dairy products provide a rich source of calcium, necessary for healthy bones, and most are fortified with vitamin D, which helps with absorption of calcium.

It's recommended that you get 1000 milligrams of calcium each day, 1200 mg if you are over 50 years old.

Foods rich in calcium include:

  • milk, cheese, yogurt and other dairy products
  • fish such as salmon and sardines
  • broccoli, kale and many other leafy green vegetables
