You Say Tomato...I Say...Salmonella??

Posted on June 11, 2008 04:01 by Marianne

First it was spinach, now it's tomatoes!  Tomatoes still attached to their vine are safe.  Of course they cost more, but not as much as a stay in the hospital.  Cherry tomatoes and grape tomatoes are also safe.

As far as other tomatoes, you'll need a spreadsheet to keep track of which ones from where are probably safe, so maybe it's best to just not buy them.  Care to read the FDA Statement?

If you bring home a contaminated tomato, the bacteria gets on your hands, and therefore everything you touch, your knife, your cutting board, the servng platter, any food that it touches...

Sure, there is risk of salmonella in lots of the food we eat, which is why cleaning and preventing cross contamination are so important.  Mix 1 teaspoon of bleach to 1 quart of water and use this to sanitize cleaned surfaces.  Replace the mixture every week. It's a good habit especially over the summer when there is so much fresh produce.
