Today I read Amy Vernon blogging about soda and obesity in children. Nothing new there, but she went on to talk about the amounts her kids eat. Since they are young, it isn't much compared to the grocery guzzlers in my house. But what was interesting was her link to toddler portions. It got me wondering exactly how much kids need. So, I went on and found the information at the American Heart Association. Sure, sure, you say, heard it before. But wait, I'm not done. The kicker is their footnote, which I quote:
*Calorie estimates are based on a sedentary lifestyle. Increased physical activity will require additional calories: by 0-200 kcal/d if moderately physically active; and by 200–400 kcal/d if very physically active.
Really? Is it that bad? Do we now ASSUME that kids are sedentary? At least in the adult table you get a choice, but for the kids, they assume sedentary. And that, to me, is scary and sad at the same time. We make meal plans and track calories going in, maybe we need to plan calories going out as well.
