Where's the beef? You may be surprised...
When the story about the beef recall first broke I was more concerned with the inhumane treatment of the cattle than about the potential harm from the beef. The recalled beef was from California, and I'm waaaaay out here in Michigan. Imagine my surprise when our school district announced that they have 200 pounds of the questionable meat in possession. They said, however, that they were told at the end of January to set aside this meat and that it was never consumed by students (other school districts in Michigan did serve it, but reported no illness). Ironically, the hot lunch for the next day was hamburgers. Not for my kids! I plan lunches right along with everything else because I want to know what they are eating, and they're pretty picky anyhow.
If you, too, are becoming more concerned about the food your family is eating, check out Community Suported Agriculture or Slow Food USA. Ann Arbor had a meeting right after the beef announcement, and there were over 150 people in attendance. Supporting local food producers is good for you and good for your community.
